Worst Mother’s Day Experience #1: Not Getting Flowers due to Infertility
A woman named Angel Searle, who works as a Business Development Agent for GearLaunch, shared her heart-breaking story of how her worst Mother’s Day experience: She was embarrassed and self-pitying for not getting a carnation flower on Mother’s Day because of her and her husband’s inability to have a child.
On a Sunday, which is Mother’s Day, Angel, her husband and his mother went to the local church. The service was special that day. The three of them were sitting near the front when they saw a bunch of the church elders come in carrying baskets and baskets of red carnations. The pastor began to ask mothers who have more than 5 children to come up and take a red carnation for themselves. Angel saw where this was going, she fought off the urge to flee and witnessed dozens of women stepping up to get their flowers – moms who have four children, three children, then two, and one.
Angel felt an intense horror as her private pain was about to be publicly displayed, but she tried to hold her tears in order not to ruin the lovely event. The pain was overwhelming when the pastor also asked for pregnant moms to come up, as a hugely pregnant woman proudly stood up to get her flower. It was a nightmare for Angel.
She could only sit there and think to herself: “You don’t get a flower. You’re not a mother. You’re not special, you’re not worthy of honor.” Her mother-in-law tried to comfort her but it was no use. She hated this whole thing.
Years have passed and thankfully, Angel finally had her own baby and got to celebrate Mother’s Day – “but I will never forget the day that I was so brutally reminded that I was not a mother” – She exclaimed as she remembered the worst Mother’s Day experience of her life.
Worst Mother’s Day Experience #2: Getting Divorced right on Mother’s Day
Sadie Jacob – a single mom in her 40s also shared a rather shocking story.
Sadie worked at a jewelry store, so Mother’s Day was still a work day for her. As if having to work on mom’s day wasn’t frustrating enough, she experienced – to be honest – one of the worst Mother’s Days in the world!
As Sadie got up like normal to get ready for work, her husband was still in bed and her son was asleep across the hall. Sadie had done her makeup and hair, and when she went to the closet to get her jacket, her husband rolled over and literally said: “I’ve been meaning to tell you, this is over, I want a divorce.”
Yep. Sadie’s husband was asking her for a divorce on freaking Mother’s Day! Sadie knew the relationship between her and her husband was not good, but she wasn’t aware of how bad it actually was. She revealed that her husband never acknowledged Mother’s Day, he never took their son out to get her Mother’s Day flowers or gifts, not even a card. To him, Mother’s Day is just like any other day, no wonder he discussed divorce right that morning and had no guilt for it. Instead he drank all day while Sadie cried her eyes out at work trying to get through the day.
To end the story, Sadie affirmed that her husband’s unhappiness was the cause of all of his bad behavior. Every bad deed was because he was working too much, too tired, and she “wouldn’t let him” blow off steam.
It took Sadie another year and a half, plus lots of heartache to relieve before her marriage was officially over. For her, Mother’s Day is now a source of great anxiety and a little remaining bitterness. Once such a negative experience is attached to a holiday, it never really detaches itself. Looks like Mother’s Day this year is again a reminder of pain for the single mom.
